VIP Students Explore Coastal Resilience in Savannah

From February 20–22, students from the Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) Program’s Coastal Climate Solutions course at Georgia Institute of Technology traveled to Savannah for an immersive, hands-on learning experience. The visit provided students with a valuable opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with real-world applications while engaging directly with communities supported by the CEAR Hub.

Through the VIP Program, students collaborate with faculty on large-scale, long-term, multidisciplinary project teams. Participants earn academic credit and may engage over multiple semesters, with returning students taking on mentorship, leadership, and expanded responsibilities within their areas of study.

Throughout the weekend, students visited several key locations that highlight both the cultural significance and environmental challenges of coastal Georgia. These included the Pin Point Heritage Museum, Tybee Island, the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, and the Burton 4-H Center, where students learned about living shoreline projects and coastal conservation efforts. The group also visited the Tybee Pier and Pavilion and explored communities on Savannah’s west side near the Port of Savannah to better understand the intersection of industry, environment, and community resilience.

These visits deepened students’ understanding of the environmental and social challenges facing coastal communities, as well as the innovative, community-driven solutions being implemented to build resilience.

In addition to site visits and community engagement, students also experienced the culture and charm of Savannah, including its rich history and renowned food scene. This balance of learning and exploration created a well-rounded and memorable experience.

Overall, the visit reinforced the value of place-based learning and highlighted the importance of building strong relationships between universities and the communities they serve. The CEAR Hub looks forward to continuing to create opportunities that empower students while supporting community-led resilience across coastal Georgia.
