On February 28, students participated in the Pin Point K-12 Community Garden Program. Engaging in a hands-on learning experience focused on sustainability, agriculture, and environmental stewardship. The session combined practical garden restoration with creative science-based activities that highlighted the full life cycle of plants and organic materials.

Garden Restoration & Preparation

Students began the day with a community work session in the garden, removing weeds and clearing beds in preparation for a new growing season. Through this activity, they learned how proper garden maintenance supports plant health and ensures a strong harvest. The teamwork and shared responsibility fostered pride in the garden space and reinforced key lessons about environmental care.

Compost & Okra Paper-Making Activity

A highlight of the day was a creative STEM activity where students learned how to make paper using compostable plant fibers and dried okra. They explored:

  • How organic material breaks down

  • How fiber structures can be reused

  • The sustainability benefits of recycling natural materials

This hands-on process allowed students to connect science concepts to real-world applications while also creating a unique take-home product.

Seedling Preparation

Students concluded the session by learning how to prepare seedlings for the upcoming planting season. They practiced:

  • Selecting seeds suitable for the garden’s soil and climate

  • Filling starter trays

  • Learning how moisture, sunlight, and temperature affect germination

These skills will support the next phase of the community garden project as students begin to nurture their seedlings and eventually transfer them into the garden beds.
